Mona Baker's non-equivalence at word level translation strategies is applied in my research to identify translation techniques used in the Thai-translated Encanto soundtrack. Her translation strategies include utilizing a more general term, a less expressive word, cultural substitution, a loan word or a loan word plus explanation, a paraphrase using a related word, a paraphrase using an unrelated word, an omission, and an illustration.

Mona Baker is a prominent authority in translation studies and has established important communication tools for this academic field, including the publishing company St. Jerome Publishing and the worldwide magazine The Translator. She is also the International Society of Translation and Intercultural Studies' Deputy President.

The lexical translation methods discussed in Mona Baker's book, In Other Words, can be used to evaluate the lexical translations in the Thai version of Encanto songs. In cases where a word from the original text lacks a direct translation in the target language, this translation phenomenon is referred to as non-equivalence at the word level.

Background and Education

On September 20, 1953, in Egypt, Mona Baker was born. A BA in English and Comparative Literature was the result of Baker's studies at the American University in Cairo. At the University of Birmingham, she later completed a MA program in applied languages. Her relocation to the University of Manchester College of Science and Technology in 1995 led to her appointment as a professor there in 1997.

Career

Mona Baker resigned from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) in 2015 as Professor of Translation Studies and Head of the Centre for Translation and International Studies. She is now an Associate Professor at the University of Oslo's Centre for Sustainable Hospital Education (SHE).
